The flagstone walkway was painstakingly laid out, with each piece being shaped to fit to the one beside it.
Tucked away under large mature trees, the gardens surrounding this cottage needed to be refreshed. This long-time client contacted us to see what could be done to improve the look of the property and to solve a drainage issue with the walkway. The existing natural stone walkway was in poor condition and sat lower than the surrounding grade, causing issues with standing water and ice buildup in the winter months. The loose stone made the surface uneven and made removing snow difficult.
The gardens are located on the North side of the house and receive very little direct sunlight. To address these concerns, our team selected shade tolerant plants with an emphasis on foliage color and textures to make up for the lack of large blooms found on sun loving plants.
The flagstone walkway was painstakingly laid out, with each piece being shaped to fit to the one beside it. The stone was then mortared to the new concrete slab. The new walkway complements the rustic look of the property and is a much more practical surface that will be dry in the summer and easier to keep cleared in winter. The generous width of the new walkway allows two people to comfortably walk side by side while enjoying the gardens.
The combination of stonework and planting give this charming house a rustic look without sacrificing practicallity.
